The DMC Historical Society welcomes volunteers. There may be a spot for you. Current volunteer positions open are:
Museum Attendants: The Heritage Center needs desk attendants and docents for a variety of time periods during the week. The Phelps House Museum is seeking docents for weekend afternoons for May through September, 2012. If you are interested, please ask for a volunteer application form or call the Phelps House (319-753-5880) to leave a message.
Clothing Curators: The Clothing Committee welcomes those interested in studying and caring for the many vintage clothing pieces in the DMCHS collection.Call Jim Hunt at Phelps House (319-753-5880) if you would like to help.
Collection Assistants: The Collection Committee works with the artifacts that have been donated to maintain an accurate inventory and catalogue of the thousands of items in the collection. Contact Deb Olson (752-7449) if you are interested in working with this committee.
Program Planning and Refreshments: The Special Events committee plans three or four major events each year and several smaller programs. If you like working on parties or preparing refreshments for events and programs, please contact Deb Olson at the Heritage Center (319-752-7449).
Program Presenters: The Adult Programming/Lifelong Learning program is looking for presenters for the upcoming 2011-12 year. If you would like to share your passion for your collection or favorite bit of history, please call the Heritage Center (319-752-7449) and leave a message for Judy Stevens. The School Program/ Museum Education committee invites those with a teaching background or a passion for children's education to work with the children's groups that visit the museum during the year. Gardeners: The cottage garden at Phelps House and the prairie restoration landscaping at the Heritage Center provide opportunities for master gardener applicants. Call the Heritage Center (319-752-7449) for more information.
Data Entry: The Collection Committee and DMCHS offers the opportunity to work with our database system in digitally recording and entering artifact information into the Past Perfect system. If you are intersted, please contact Deb Olson at 319-752-7449.
Volunteer Board Members: Each of the Board Members of the Des Moines County Historical Society volunteers in many ways for the society. This is a committment of time and passion. If you would like to serve on the Board and help direct this organization as it grows, please volunteer and express your interest in the future of the Des Moines County Historical Society.
